Workshop - April 2010

A couple of jobs through the workshop recently.

The handrail knobs, in stainless steel, are for a full-sized replica of the 15 inch gauge 0-4-0 "Effie". Cut from a 35mm bar, the profile was machined in two passes with left and right hand tools - the "join" is about a third of the way along the taper section. To cross drill them a fixture was made which held the part flat against the three jaw chuck, after initial drilling the hole was bored to size (in this case to take a 3/4 inch handrail).

The pump came in as a repair job - it's off a 4 1/2 inch scale Burrell agricultural engine. The original pump rod was bent and fractured clean in two, the new one was made from the solid, the majority of the machining done on the VMC, the holes put in on the Bridgeport.
